The Portland Timbers announced Thursday that they agreed to a multi-year contract extension with midfielder Eryk Williamson. Williamson, 23, was a surprise contributor last season when he recorded three goals and five assists in 21 games (17 as a starter). At the start of the season, the Alexandria, Virginia native was scoreless in seven career appearances. “Signing Eryk has been a key objective of the club for the past 12 months and we are delighted that Eryk’s faith in the club reflects our faith in him,” Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson said in a press release. . “Eryk is a unique talent and we are looking forward to seeing his continued growth and performance as a Timbers player.” Portland coach Giovanni Savarese was impressed with Williamson’s appearance and feels more improvements are coming. “Eryk is an extremely talented and creative player with many excellent attributes on and off the field,” Savarese said. “I believe a lot in the development of American players and I am incredibly excited to see him continue his career in Portland.” (Field-level media)
