(Reuters) – After nearly four years without victories, 27-year-old American Jordan Spieth is back in business. The former child prodigy earned his first PGA Tour victory a couple of weeks before his 20th birthday in 2013 and went on to win the Masters, his first of three major titles, two years later, starting a remarkable streak early in his career. But he hadn’t lifted a trophy since the British Open in 2017. That drought ended Sunday when he beat compatriot Charley Hoffman by two strokes at the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio, and he told reporters after the final round that he hadn’t. It hit him completely that he was back in the winner’s circle. “It has been a road that has had many difficult days. I have had people in my corner who have always believed in me, even when I believed less in myself,” Spieth said. “I am very grateful for those who have helped me to return here.” The victory could provide a much-needed boost for the 12-time PGA Tour winner, who came into the tournament largely looking to hone his short game before traveling to Augusta this week to compete in the Masters. “I have quite a bit to rebuild in my game so it’s actually pretty easy for me to put my head down and focus on getting to work for next week,” Spieth said, adding that he looked forward to working on his swing. “The consistency, the cleanliness and the type of swing stiffness still have a long way to go.”
