(Reuters) – Second seed Karen Khachanov edged South African Kevin Anderson 6-3 7-6 (5) to reach the Great Ocean Road Open quarter-finals on Friday. The 24-year-old Russian did not drop serve throughout the match and secured the only break of the match midway through the first set of the Australian Open warm-up event. Khachanov will next face Dutch under-seeded Botic Van de Zandschulp, who defeated American sixth seed Reilly Opelka in two tie-breaking sets. In other round of 16 matches, Italian teenager Jannik Sinner defeated Aljaz Bedene 7-6 (6) 6-2, while local favorite Jordan Thompson edged Spanish Mario Vilella Martínez 6-4, 6-4. All quarterfinal matches of the event will take place later on Friday. The game was suspended on Thursday when more than 500 players and officials were screened for COVID-19 after a worker at one of the quarantined hotels in Melbourne contracted the new coronavirus.
