By Brendan O’Brien CHICAGO (Reuters) – Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Sunday that Chicago schools and their teachers union reached a tentative agreement on a COVID-19 safety plan, an important milestone that will put end a bitter labor dispute and avoid a possible work stoppage. The Chicago Public Schools (CPS), the third-largest school district in the United States, and the Chicago Teachers Union, which represents 28,000 educators, have been locked in talks for months about a gradual reopening of schools, and teachers are demanding stricter security protocols to prevent the spread of the virus in classrooms. “I am delighted to announce that CPS has finally reached a tentative agreement with the Chicago Teachers Union,” Lightfoot said during a news conference. The Chicago Teachers Union said members have yet to approve the tentative agreement. “The mayor and her team made an offer to our members last night that deserves further review,” the union said in a tweet ahead of Lightfoot’s announcement. “We will continue our democratic grassroots review process throughout the day before an agreement is reached.”
