(Reuters) – The political advocacy arm of reproductive services provider Planned Parenthood endorsed Democrat Joe Biden for the US presidency on Monday, calling his run against Republican President Donald Trump a “fight for the survival of our country.” .
The right to abortion remains a hot topic in the November 3 presidential election. Advocates have criticized the Trump administration’s efforts to limit access to abortion, including a series of conservative court appointments and several policy changes.
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund, which earlier this year launched a $ 45 million campaign to support Democratic candidates, was expected to back the Democratic presidential nominee, as it has in recent elections.
“In this election we have a choice: between Donald Trump, whose incompetence and disregard for the law are a danger to us all, and Joe Biden, who is committed to fighting for reproductive health and rights for all,” Alexis McGill Johnson, Planned Parenthood. The Acting Chairman of the Action Fund said in a statement.
The group praised Biden’s role in passing the Affordable Care Act while serving as vice president to President Barack Obama and for his long-standing support for reproductive rights.
But his record drew skepticism from some advocates during the Democratic primary campaign. Biden, a Roman Catholic, was for years a supporter of the Hyde Amendment, a law that bans federal funding for most abortions, before reversing his position last year.
Advocates have raised concerns that the conservative US Supreme Court, which has two Trump appointments, may consider revising Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that guaranteed the right to have an abortion.
Trump, who views evangelical Christians as a crucial part of his political base, has regularly touted their aggressive actions to counter abortion rights.
“Unborn children have never had a stronger advocate in the White House,” Trump said at a rally by opponents of abortion in Washington in January.
