LONDON (Reuters) – Amazon (NASDAQ 🙂 has halted sales of wines, beers and spirits in Northern Ireland and is preparing to remove more products from the list due to new Brexit customs rules, broadcaster ITV reported on Tuesday. (LON :). The online retailer is concerned that excise duty now has to be paid twice on shipments of alcohol sent from the British mainland via the Irish Sea to Northern Ireland, ITV reported. Britain left the single market and the customs union of the European Union on December 31, introducing customs formalities and declarations for those companies that import and export goods with the bloc. To keep the border open between the British province of Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland, a separate agreement was reached requiring a regulatory border in the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom. The British government said the overwhelming majority of packages continued to move smoothly and that there was no reason why companies should not ship goods to Northern Ireland. “These assets will not be taxed twice, and we will issue new guidance clarifying the position to ensure that remaining issues are addressed,” a government spokesman said.
