LIVERPOOL, England (Reuters) – Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the winning goal in injury time as Liverpool struggled to snatch a 2-1 win from Aston Villa and move up to the top four in the Premier League on provisional Saturday. Juergen Klopp’s team claimed their first league home win in 2021 after right-back Alexander-Arnold scored with a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area upon death. After suffering a humiliating 7-2 loss at Villa Park in October, defending champion Liverpool enjoyed a better start at Anfield when forwards Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota tested visiting goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez on the first downs. But Villa, against the game’s progress, found advancement in the 43rd minute when John McGinn sent a clean pass to striker Ollie Watkins, whose effort slipped under the right arm of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson. Liverpool responded almost immediately through Roberto Firmino, but his goal was scored in chalk by VAR, as Jota was considered marginally offside in preparation. However, the hosts deservedly tied at 12 minutes into the second half with a header from Salah after left-back Andy Robertson’s opening shot was parried by Martinez and Alexander-Arnold’s effort secured all three points.
